A Simple Summary of Shakespeares Hamlet
A Simple Summary of Shakespeare's Hamlet William Shakespeares famous work Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a tragedy set across five acts written around the year 1600. More than just a revenge play, Hamlet deals with questions about life and existence, sanity, love, death, and betrayal. It is one of the most quoted works of literature in the world, and since 1960 it has been translated into 75 languages (including Klingon). The Action Begins Otherworldly As the play begins, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is visited by a mysterious ghost resembling his recently-deceased father the king. The ghost tells Hamlet that his father was murdered by Claudius, the kingââ¬â¢s brother, who then took the throne and married Hamletââ¬â¢s mother Gertrude. The ghost encourages Hamlet to avenge his fatherââ¬â¢s death by killing Claudius. The task before Hamlet weighs heavily upon him. Is the ghost evil, trying to tempt him to do something that will send his soul to hell for eternity? Hamlet questions whether the specter is to be believed. Hamletââ¬â¢s uncertainty, anguish, and grief are what makes the character so believable. He is arguably one of literatureââ¬â¢s most psychologically complex characters. He is slow to take action, but when he does it is rash and violent. We can see this in the famous ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¹curtain sceneâ⬠when Hamlet kills Polonius. Hamletââ¬â¢s Love Poloniusââ¬â¢ daughter Ophelia is in love with Hamlet, but their relationship has broken down since Hamlet learned of his fatherââ¬â¢s death. Ophelia is instructed by Polonius and Laertes to spurn Hamletââ¬â¢s advances. Ultimately, Ophelia commits suicide as a result of Hamletââ¬â¢s confusing behavior toward her and the death of her father. A Play Within a Play In Act 3, Scene 2, Hamlet organizes actors to re-enact his fatherââ¬â¢s murder at the hands of Claudius in order to gauge Claudiusââ¬â¢ reaction. He confronts his mother about his fatherââ¬â¢s murder and hears someone behind the arras. Believing it to be Claudius, Hamlet stabs the man with his sword. It transpires that he has actually killed Polonius. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Claudius realizes that Hamlet is out to get him and professes that Hamlet is mad. Claudius arranges for Hamlet to be shipped to England with his former friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who have been informing the king about Hamletââ¬â¢s state of mind. Claudius has secretly sent orders for Hamlet to be killed on arrival in England, but Hamlet escapes from the ship and swaps his death order for a letter ordering the deaths of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. To Be or Not to Be â⬠¦ Hamlet arrives back in Denmark just as Ophelia is being buried, which prompts him to contemplate life, death, and the frailty of the human condition. The performance of this soliloquy is a big part of how any actor portraying Hamlet is judged by critics.à à Tragic Ending Laertes returns from France to avenge the death of Polonius, his father. Claudius plots with him to make Hamletââ¬â¢s death appear accidental and encourages him to anoint his sword with poison. He also puts a cup of poison aside, in case the sword is unsuccessful. In the action, the swords are swapped and Laertes is mortally wounded with the poisoned sword after striking Hamlet with it. He forgives Hamlet before he dies. Gertrude dies by accidentally drinking the cup of poison. Hamlet stabs Claudius and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned drink. Hamlets revengeà is finally complete. In his dying moments, he bequeaths the throne to Fortinbras and prevents Horatios suicide by imploring him to stay alive to tell the tale.

The dimension of all specimens is given in this experiment. They are sticker on wall inside the lab. But, we decided to measure all the dimension of the specimens manually in order to get more accurate value of our own. At first, our group is doing the experiment on Round concord bar specimen. Other apparatus has been assembled properly, which includes protractor to measure the angle of 1 50 from y-axis (vertical-axis). This angle is the starting point before the round concord bar is released to swing freely for 10 times. Total swinging time in second is measured by using a stopwatch provided. Next, the experiment is done on Square concord bar and Trapezium bar respectively. We record all the data from this experiment in the lab sheet provided by the lecturer. After we finished the experiment, all the group members co-operating to rearrange all the apparatus back to it normal position. Consider an extended body of mass [pick]with a hole drilled though it. Suppose that the body is suspended from a fixed peg, which passes through the hole, such that it is free to swing from side to side, as shown in figure below: [pick] Figure above shows a setup of compound pendulum. Background 3 by Mood Faith Bin Mood Koori A compound pendulum is a rigid body swinging in a vertical plane about any horizontal axis passing through the body. Pendulums have many practical applications Including timekeeping and measuring gravitational field strength. The simple pendulum is treated in many elementary physics texts but is an idealization which does not include the mass of the arm which supports the swinging bob. The experiment is done to find centre of mass of experiments specimen. There are three type of specimens used in this experiment. They are Trapezium bar, Round condor bar and Square condor bar. In order to see if this simple theory will allow accurate analysis of real pendulums, we carried out an experimental investigation of a compound Pendulum, focusing on the dependence of T on l, where T is the period for small oscillations of the pendulum when the distance between the centre of gravity and the Axis of rotation is l. In the schematic representation of a pendulum shown in the illustration, O represents the axis and C the center of mass. The line CO makes an instantaneous angle B with the vertical. In rotary motion of any rigid body about a fixed axis, the angular acceleration is equal to the torque about the axis divided by the moment of inertia I about the axis. Background 4 by Mohammad Hafiz Bin Mohammad Argali A body which rotates about an axis through its centre of mass will have a moment of inertia given by mega where k is called the radius of gyration of that body for that axis. The radius of gyration is the point in a rotating body at which all the mass appears to be concentrated. If another axis through the centre of mass is chosen then the radius of Wharton will be different for the different axis of rotation.

Title 18 that refers to Medicare in the social security act allocated health insurance for the aged and disabled. The social security act amended the Medicare legislation in 1965. It established a health insurance program. It was meant for the aged persons, in order to make up for retirement. It also catered for survivors and covered disability insurance health benefits. This was under title two of the social security act. (pg.6) Another component of the social security act is title 19. This is a federal or a state entitlement program. This one provides financial aid to certain individuals and families who have low income and scarce resources. In 1965 the Medicare program became law. It is regarded as a cooperative venture, whose financial problems are covered for by both federal, and the state government. This includes the District of Columbia and the territories. Their participation was in order to assist the states in providing sensible medical assistance, to particularly needy people. As a result, Medicare became the biggest source of financial support. This covers medical and other health-related services for people who are financially challenged. Title 21 covers the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP). From March, it is now known as the State Childrenââ¬â¢s Health Insurance Program. It caters for children from financially challenged families that do not qualify for Medicaid. It was brought into place by the Balanced Budget Act (BBA) of 1997. Small War In The Context Of Law Empire - Essay Example The small war also comprises of campaigns aimed to subdue the existing guerrillasââ¬â¢ warfare and rebellions in different parts of the universe. In these areas, several soldiers and other defense forces have been deployed to fight back the militants or rebels who are cowards and do not have the courage to battle with militaries in open ground or field. Therefore, small war can be said to involve operations that are extremely unreliable and unpredictable as far as their scope and conditions are concerned. The scope of a small war entails organization of soldiers for irregular warfare information that is very valuable and important in defeating the enemy. The military logistics arrangements are e xhaustively dealt with and in detail. These logistic arrangements include communication lines, transport, and the supply system. In respect to strategies and tactics in place, a sketch of the rules, practice and the principles of a small war is established which will govern the conducts of armies while in war operations against the enemies. In small wars, it very significant to learn the varying hostile mode of war to a certain extent and get conversant with the possible war circumstances to prevail in the course of the battle. Significance of soliloquies and asides in Richard III Essay Example for Free
Significance of soliloquies and asides in Richard III Essay In Richard III, Shakespeare uses soliloquies and asides as a mode of expressing the otherwise internal thought process of a character. They represent dialogues between the mind of the character and the audience and create a sense of intimacy between them as the audience is given access to the internal world of the characters and are able to keep track of and understand the series of events in the play. As a result, soliloquies and asides play a very significant role as they provide the audience with information such as vital background information, straightforward declarations of intent and future plans. They also help to convey a theme, or heighten the tragedy of the play. Asides are particularly used by villains such as Richard to reveal both their schemes and their fraudulence to the audience. As such, it plays a key role in Richards character development throughout the play, revealing to us his evil nature and deceitful plots. Act 1 Scene 1 opens with Richards most important, first soliloquy. He starts by taking up the role of a narrator and filling us in on some background information relevant to the story-line of the play so that we will be able to better understand the plot and the cause of his actions. He speaks of his familys victory in the fight against Henry VI and tells us that his brother Edward, who has recently ascended the throne, is now living the high life He capers nimbly in a ladys chamber/ To the lascivious pleasing of a lute (I.i). In addition, he shows us the contrast in his mood and explains to us his inability to be merry due to his physical deformities saying, But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks/ Nor made to court an amorous looking glass/ Have no delight to pass away the time (I.i.14,15,25).Thus, to relieve the boredom and to serve his own ambition, he determines to prove a villain, subtle, false and treacherous. This shows us his low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with himself which is evident from his tone of bitterness, anger and disgust as he feels that he is very ugly and unloved such that even dogs bark at him. It also reveals to us his evil and jealous nature as he decides to pass away his time by plotting to overthrow his brother from the throne and cause unrest and unhappiness. Hence, the first soliloquy helps us understand the context of the play better, introduces us to Richards true, evil nature as well as keeps us in anticipation as we are also let in on how he plans to attain the throne, with the phrase plots have I laid To set my brother Clarence and the king/ In deadly hate (I.i.32-35), which also acts as a tool for foreshadowing. The following soliloquies in Act 1 further characterizes Richard and shows us that he would do anything, even murder, to fulfil his goal and get his way. His sarcasm and lack of love towards his own brother Clarence as well as his cruel and violent nature is seen here as he shows no hesitance in getting his brother killed, Simple, plain Clarence, I do love thee so/That I will shortly send thy soul to heaven (I.i.119-120). His wicked, and depraved nature is also brought out through his soliloquy in Act 1 Scene 2 as he ridicules Lady Anne for having fallen for his tricks and lies and talks about his heartless plan of using her simply to gain the throne saying, Was ever woman in this humor won?/Ill have her, but I will not keep her long (I.ii.235-236). His attitude here marks a shift in his perception of himself as he had mentioned that he was not meant for sportive tricks in his opening soliloquy. However, now he has had a confidence boost due to the success with Lady Anne and says Ill be at charges for a looking glass/And entertain a score or two of tailor (I.ii.262-263). Hence this soliloquy plays a role in his character development as we can see the change in his self-image and character. In his soliloquies, Richard also secretly associates himself with the devil as seen in Act 1 Scene 3 where he says And seem a saint, when most I play the devil. This also brings out Richards duplicity and ability to deceive as he manages to fool others into thinking that he is noble and sincere. This heightens the tragedy, as Richard conquers every character from Lady Anne to his own brother Clarence through his eloquence and proficiency in pretence. Other than soliloquies, asides are also used by several characters such as Richard himself as well as Queen Margaret to reveal their true thoughts and feelings. In Act 3 Scene 1, Richard uses asides to show us what he really thins of the young prince and how he deceives him with the use of double meanings in his words. For example, [Aside] Thus like the formal Vice, Iniquity, I moralize two meanings in one word. (III.i.79-83) Over here, his comparison of himself to Vice, is apt as he does play Vice, a comic role, when he is speaking with the audience. However, he always also has two meanings, which is what allows him to also be the machiavel. Also, Margaret uses asides in Act 1 Scene 3 to inform us of Richards treacheries and prevent us from being deceived like the other characters present. For example, she says (aside) Out, devil! I do remember them too well:/Thou killedst my husband Henry in the Tower,/And Edward, my poor son, at Tewkesbury. Her reference to him as a devil is nothing new to us, but simply confirms his evil nature. As such, the asides used have played a part in keeping us informed of the characters innermost thoughts as well as developing Richards character in the play.

Death of a Salesman Essay -- Arthur Miller Exposes Willy Loman
ââ¬Å"Death of a Salesmanâ⬠written by Arthur Miller in 1948 attempts to give the audience an unusual glimpse into the mind of a Willy Loman, a mercurial 60-year-old salesman, who through his endeavor to be ââ¬Å"worth somethingâ⬠, finds himself struggling to endure the competitive capitalist world in which he is engulfed. Arthur Miller uses various theatrical techniques to gradually strip the protagonist down one layer at a time, each layer revealing another truth about his distorted past. By doing this, Miller succeeds in finally exposing a reasonable justification for Willyââ¬â¢s current state of mind. These techniques are essential to the play, as it is only through this development that Willy can realistically be driven to motives of suicide. The very first section of the first scene, already defines the basis of Willyââ¬â¢s character for the rest of the play. The stage directions on page 8 identify him as being an exhausted aging man, whose work seems to be wearing him down. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦lets his burden downâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Miller, 8). Although this makes Willy appear uninteresting, he soon contrasts this characteristic when he shows an optimistic determination towards his own failures. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll start out in the morning. Maybe Iââ¬â¢ll feel better in the morning.â⬠(Miller, 9) Another aspect of Willy that makes him more interesting to the audience is his already visible complexity of layers: ââ¬Å"I have such thoughts, I have such strange thoughts.â⬠(Miller, 9) This of course leads the audience on to wondering what exactly is taking place in a manââ¬â¢s head to make him say such a thing, evoking a mild fascination in Willyââ¬â¢s character. Another character that is developed almost immed iately within the first two pages of the play is Linda. Again the stage directions on page 8 introdu... ...me period without using artificial ââ¬Å"memorable speechâ⬠. This conveyance of realism to the audience is vital for Willyââ¬â¢s motives to seem plausible, and for Willy to be believed in as a character. On the other hand however, ââ¬Å"Death of a Salesmanâ⬠offers the audience another aspect of the play in which the inner mind of a character is symbolically represented in an expressionistic way on stage. Arthur Miller however succeeds in combining theses seemingly contradictory techniques, by conveying a sense of realism in the way the protagonistââ¬â¢s mind is portrayed, creates what sets it aside from anything alike it.
