Neural Control and Coordination
ââ¬Å"NEURAL CONTROL AND CO-ORDINATIONâ⬠Co-ordination ââ¬â It is the process through which two or more organs interact and complement the functions of each other. Neuron ââ¬â It is the functional and structural unit of nervous system. Therefore, the nervous system is also known as NEURAL SYSTEM. Neurons with longer projections are said to be the longest cells in our body. There are about 100 billion neurons and most of them exist in the brain. Some neurons have flask-shaped and are called Purkinje cells. They are found in the cerebellum of brain. Shortly after birth neurons do not develop.A neuron has two main parts viz. a) Cell body or Cyton or Soma ââ¬â It may be up to 13. 5 à µm in diameter and may be irregular, oval, rounded, etc. Neuroplasm and neurolemma are its cytoplasm and cell membrane. A cyton consists of cell organelles like other cells. Besides, it also has neurofibrils, neurotubules and Nissls granules or bodies. Neurofibrils take part in transmissio n of impulse Nissls granules or bodies are irregular masses of rough endoplasmic reticulum on which free ribosomes and polysomes are attached. Nissls granules probably synthesize protein for the cell. ) Cytoplasmic processes or neuritis ââ¬â They are of two types. 1. Dendrites or dendrons ââ¬â They contain neurofibrils, neutubules and Nissls granules. They conduct nerve impulse towards the cell body and are called afferent processes (receiving processes). They may be one to several. 2. Axon or Axis ââ¬â It is a single long process of uniform thickness. The part of cyton from where the axon arises is called Axon hillock and is the most sensitive part of a neuron. An axon does not have Nissls granules, golgi complex, ribosome, etc. So cyton supplies protein to axon. Its cell membrane and cytoplasm are known as axolemma and axoplasm respectively. Axon ends in a group of branches called terminal arborizations (axon terminals or telodendria). They have synaptic knob to form sy napse where axon and dendrite of two successive neurons can meet. Motor end plate ââ¬â The part of sarcolemma that lies beneath the axon terminals (nerve endings). Axon conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body hence called efferent processes. TYPES OF AXON There are two types such as myelinated (medullary) and non-myelinated (non-medullary) In myelinated neurons, the axon is surrounded by myelin sheaths.Myelin sheaths have regular interruptions called node of Ranvier. The space between two successive node of Ranvier is called internodes. Around the myelin sheaths, there is a delicate sheath made up of nucleated cells called Schwann cells. VARIOUS PARTS OF NEURAL SYSTEM It can be divided as Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral nervous system (PNS). Central Nervous System; The CNS comprises brain and spinal cord. BRAIN: It is the anterior most part of the CNS. It lies inside the cranial cavity of the skull. It weighs from 1220 to 1400gms. It has membranes called meni nges (sing. eninx), they are 1) Piamater ââ¬â It is thin and innermost membrane Sub arachnoid space lies between piamater and arachnoid membrane. Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF) is found in this space . It provides medium for exchange of food materials, wastes, respiratory gases, etc. 2) Arachnoid mater ââ¬â It is thin and spider webby. It is the middle membrane. Subdural space lies between arachnoid mater and dura mater. 3) Duramater ââ¬â It is the outermost fibrous membrane. **Fontanales ââ¬â Membranous areas between the cranial bones of foetal skull. Structure of human brain: It has three parts viz. ) Forebrain or Prosencephalon ââ¬â It includes olfactory lobe, cerebrum and diencephalon Olfactory lobe ââ¬â It lies in the temporal lobe. * Function ââ¬â It receives impulses from the nose. Cerebrum ââ¬â It is the largest and most complicated part of the brain . Its outer portion is called the outer cortex and it forms the GREY MATTER. Beneath the grey matt er, there are millions of medullated (myelinated) nerve fibres. They form white matter. * Function -It creates ideas, touch, perception, reasoning, decision making. * Diencephalon ââ¬â Hypothalamus is located here. Hypothalamus maintains homeostasis. It is also called therefore called THERMOREGULATORY CENTRE OR THERMOSTAT. It keeps body temperature at roughly 37à °C. 2) Mid-brain or Mesencephalon ââ¬â It comprises cerebellum, pons varolii and medulla oblongata. Cerebellum ââ¬â It is the second largest part of brain and it has purkinje cells. * Function ââ¬â It controls rapid muscular activities like running, talking and typing. Pons varolii ââ¬â It is located above the medulla oblongata. Pneumotaxic centre is present here. **Pneumotaxic centre limits inspiration. Medulla oblongata ââ¬â It continues with spinal cord. * Function ââ¬â It regulates heart rate, blood pressure, etc.

IBM Management Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 36
IBM Management - Case Study Example As the paper highlights, employees in an organization do not want to do away with their culture and values. This paper discusses the human resource challenges that the wandering tribe poses to IBM and the possible reactions of employees to the system. One of the major human resource challenges is for the IBM is to accommodate the varied labor force by meeting their varying needs and cultures. Some of the challenges IBM faces include different countriesââ¬â¢ legislations, the firmââ¬â¢s global culture, and obsolescing skills due to swift changes in technology. IBM operates in different countries globally (IBM). As such, it has to abide to the unique laws and regulations of each of the countries as well as ensure that employees in all the countries comply to set regulations. IBM has to train its workforce to ensure that they swiftly adapt to any technological advances. This would ensure employeesââ¬â¢ skills do not become obsolete. Additionally, IBM faces internal challenge within the organization. The Organization does not have a physical space where it can control workers since it uses telecommuting concepts in its operations. Even though IBM saves $ 12 million annually in physical space cost (IBM), sustaining the organi zationââ¬â¢s values and culture is a major challenge due to the diverse labor force that is dispersed all over the world. Since employees can work from their homes, direct control is a major issue due to the difficulties of monitoring the activities of the workers. Additionally, motivation of employees can also become problematic. Employees will always react to an organizationââ¬â¢s structure and policy as any changes within the working environment directly affects them. IBM employees may feel that the organizationââ¬â¢s wandering tribe is suitable and beneficial for them while others may find the wandering tribe unsuitable.

Discussion Board 4-1 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 5
Discussion Board 4-1 - Assignment Example Psychologists have used psychological theories and biological systems to explain the findings about relationship of media and antisocial behaviors in children. To begin with and with reference to Social Development and Social Learning theories, human beings mostly rely on their surrounding environments to learn more about life. Children have immature brains that eager and curious to explore and understand most of the events happening within their environments. Since unable to analyze and sort out information received within their environments, children are likely to consider what they see as right and correct (Cavanaugh & Kail, 2013). As such, children exposed to excess viewing of violent television programs and video contents are likely to lose empathy and instead develop merciless feelings that cause them become aggressive. Such children are likely to involve in reckless and undefined wars against others due to low problem solving abilities. Research findings conducted by psychologists using different theories of human development have also shown that playing violent games as has the potential to train children on complex tactics to become aggressive. Playing and wining video games also create the urge within children to involve in physical and practical exercising of their skills (Cavanaugh & Kail, 2013). To satisfy such urges, children have to involve their colleagues or any person to violence. A good example clarifying the effects of television and media on social behaviors of children occurred in 2006 immediately after hanging of Iraqiââ¬â¢s former President Saddam Hussein. As recorded by ABC News Medical Unit (2007), a nine years old Pakistani boy named Mubashar Ali hanged himself with the help of a ten years old sister. ABC News Medical Unit (2007) adds that after three days of Saddamââ¬â¢s execution, a fifteen years old Indian girl called Moon Moon Karmarkar committed suicide using a ceiling fan in the subu rb of Kolkata. All the children

Analysis Of Mans Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl Essay
Analysis Of Mans Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl - Essay Example Next, Frankl mentions creativity and enjoyment as factors that contribute to the meaningfulness of life. Most people feel their lives to be meaningful when they have opportunities for self-expression. Meaninglessness is sensed, when a person is deprived of the above-mentioned outlets and isn't able to admit meaningfulness of both negative and positive life events, i.e. ââ¬â in a particular case of death camp imprisonment ââ¬â suffering. "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedomsââ¬âto choose oneââ¬â¢s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose oneââ¬â¢s own wayâ⬠. Therefore, inability to admit the fact that even the bitterest situations have to mean, i.e. inability to change one's attitude towards unfavorable circumstances that cannot be changed, is another element of the state of meaninglessness. The third element of the discussed state is demolition of the values that were held by an individual: "Under the inf luence of a world which no longer recognized the value of human life and human dignity, which had robbed man of his will and had made him an object to be exterminated [â⬠¦] the personal ego finally suffered a loss of values". Another element contributing to the state of meaninglessness is a lack of love, for Frankl sees love as a powerful motivator.According to Oakley, ââ¬Å"people who find their own lives meaningless are also suffering, in varying degrees, failure of motivation, anhedonia, and distressâ⬠.

Research paper solar power Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Solar power - Research Paper Example With manââ¬â¢s development and innovation, the sun has also become an energy source. Solar power is basically the power provided by the sunââ¬â¢s rays in the form of electricity or heat (Clean Energy Ideas, n.d.). Solar power has been considered a renewable form of energy compared to fossil fuels because the source, which is the sun, is basically present all the time. It is not likely to happen that the sun will burn out one day, or if it does, all of earth will be in trouble as well (Clean Energy Ideas, n.d.). rays. This photons is transforming the electrons in the materials to conduction electrons that make the electricity (Clean Energy Ideas, n.d.). Solar panels are the materials that have the electrons which create electricity. This materials look like computer chips and can also be seen in rooftops and space engines. The photons in the rays of the sun charges the electrons in the chips and the electrons flow through the cell. This is when electricity is generated (ââ¬Å"Solar Energyâ⬠, n.d.). Different techniques have been used to make solar power. One uses a U-shaped mirror which looks like long troughs and focuses the sunlight to an oil that can be found at the middle of the pipe. With the hot coming from the sun, the oil makes the water boil and this creates the solar power. One more technique is using mirrors which can be moved to catch the sunlight which is connected to a tower that collects the heat and connected to a receiver. Molten salt is used as the receiver for this kind of technique. Another technique uses windows with materials that absorb heat. Usually, they are placed in walls and floors, and at night, these materials give out heat that can make hot water in the house (ââ¬Å"Solar Energyâ⬠, n.d.). Just like any form of energy source, solar power has its pros and cons. The major benefit of solar power is that it is a sustainable source of energy. Meaning it can be harvested continuously without the fear that it will run out

Catalonia's Parliament Abolish Bullfighting Essay
Catalonia's Parliament Abolish Bullfighting - Essay Example The ban which took effect in January 2012 caused a lot of controversy, criticism and debates within Catatonia. The activities which led to the acceleration of the ban include the national anti-bullfighting movements and the cries of the animal rights activists. There were also international influence from individuals and groups who considered this tradition and activity as a total violation of the rights of animals and unnecessary risk on the lives of the participants. A review of the bull fighting tradition in the region demonstrates that it contributed significantly to the tourism and hotel industry. This is attributed to the fact that the bullfighting activities attracted tourists within Spain and from abroad who came to witness and participate in the bullfighting activities. In this regard therefore I do not agree with the ban of the bullfighting tradition. This is because of its economic and social cultural significance of the tradition to the people of Catalonia and Spain in ge neral. It is therefore arguable that the legislators of the region should have considered the benefits that the bullfighting tradition had for Catalonia before they would make a historic decision of passing the ban on this tradition. The important considerations that would have been put in mind by the legislators are the number of people who lost their employment and source of income within the bullfighting industry in addition to the negative implication that this had on the economy. The anti cruelty campaigns within Spain and other parts of the world are attributed to the ban on the bullfighting tradition in Catalonia. These campaigns have been staged for a long time and therefore the decision of the parliament on the ban was caused by the pressure of these bans. It is therefore reasonable to argue that the parliamentarians were responding to the voices and pressures of the activists and the animal rights groups instead of the actual implications that the bullfighting tradition ha d on the social economic aspects of the region. It is therefore evident that without the external pressure, the legislatures would not have decided to ban the tradition. This is due to the economic benefits and the cultural significance that the bullfighting exercise had on Catalonia. Because of the ban, the unique cultural identity of this region which led to the attraction of tourists to this region was lost. This means that the government and the economy in general experienced a negative impact from the ban which forms a reason why I do not support it. The arguments that were put forward by the supporters of the ban include postulations that Catalonia should adopt modern culture instead of the bullfighting which was considered cruel (Igor 1). In line of this, it is arguable that the people of Catalonia should not have been mandated to abandon their culture because it is this same culture which made them unique from the rest of the world communities and societies. In addition, thi s culture had been passed to the people of Catalonia from their forefathers for centuries. Therefore it is evident that the basis of a modern culture as an argument for the ban is not justifiable. Therefore the legislatures should have considered the need for the Catalonia people to preserve their conserved culture rather than submitting to the pressures of people and groups from other cultures who had no comprehension of the local culture and what it meant to the people of Catalonia. Many individuals and groups were affected by the ban of the bullfighting tradition. These include fans within Catalonia, the larger Spain and the rest of the w

Is Jealousy Ever a Good Thing Essay Example for Free
Is Jealousy Ever a Good Thing Essay Jealousy has always been one of the meanest quality of mankind. What is worse is that, it is almost inevitable. In one way or another, jealousy enters our lives, naturally and sometimes unconsciously, creating suffering for ourselves and others. As events from history and daily life have shown, humanââ¬â¢s failure to stay away from this instinct has led to ruined relationships, suffering for everyone involved, and even demoralization. Letââ¬â¢s take Cesare Borgia as an example of how dangerous jealousy is to human. As the oldest son of the powerful Pope Alexander VI of Vatican, Cesare is said to have everything, from wealth to land and power. Compared to his brother Giovanni, however, Cesare himself felt inferior. He was sick of seeing Giovanni taking away from him beautiful women and more affection from the Pope, as well as losing more important military duties and national honor in to his brother. In situations like this, it is human nature to feel jealous, but Cesareââ¬â¢s extreme envy led him to kill his brother. Now having gained absolute power, it is ironic that Cesare was still not happy. His father was so upset that he imprisoned himself in a palace for a long time, and Cesare was detested by Giovanniââ¬â¢s wife and many family members. From the story, it is startling how jealousy can make people do crazy things and turn brotherhood into rivalry, degrading moral values and causing agony to everyone. Daily life proves to be a huge source of evidences for the negative effects of jealousy. I feel sad to see the way some of my friends at school treat each other like rivals. Because of excessive competitiveness in academics, the scene of some classmates making fun of somebody elseââ¬â¢s low grade is not uncommon. I am astonished at the way many students turn so indifferent whenever I ask them for help with my homework, and the way they wish each other to fail exams so that they can climb to the top of the class. People may argue that being jealous of othersââ¬â¢ success gives them extra determination. They must have not realized that friendship is more important than superficial achievements. By being jealous, they actually develop a selfish attitude, and sacrifice what may have become their lifelong friendships. Among the many ways to achieve our goals, being jealous is absolutely the worst one, for proofs from both history and daily life have shown that it can destroy friendships and creates rivalry. Unless people can avoid it and take othersââ¬â¢ success as a model and motivation for themselves to make progress, they will never have what they want.
